Surface Waves on Veritcally Sheared Currents

چکیده

A new perturbation analysis is presented which provides a first approximation to the wave-current interaction. The model is shown to provide a good description of laboratory data provided by Swan, Cummins & James (2000) and of results from a numerical formulation. These comparisons confirm that the near-surface vorticity leads to an important modification of the dispersion relation. The results also suggest that the vorticity leads to an important modification of the dispersion relation. The results also suggest that the vorticity distribution may lead to a significant change in the water-surface profile, with an associated increase in both the maximum water-particle accelerations and the maximum horizontal water-particle velocities. Comparisons with constantvorticity solutions also suggest that it is important to model the entire vertical distribution of the current.

Estimation of Hydrodynamic Force on Rough Circular Cylinders in Random Waves and Currents (RESEARCH NOTE)

Most of the Codes of Practice (API, BSI, DnV, NPD) uses Morison's equation to estimate hydrodynamic loads on fixed and moving offshore structures. The significant difference in the prediction of the loads mainly arises from the assumption of the values of hydrodynamic coefficients. In this paper by analysing a full scale set of data in large KC's numbers collected from Delta Wave Flume in the N...

Interaction of finite-amplitude waves with vertically sheared current fields

A computationally efficient numerical method is developed to investigate nonlinear interactions between steep surface gravity waves and depth-varying ocean currents. The free-surface boundary conditions are used to derive a coupled set of equations that are integrated in time for the evolution of the free-surface elevation and tangential component of the fluid velocity at the free surface. The ...

Excitation of ion-acoustic-like waves by subcritical currents in a plasma having equal electron and ion temperatures.

The effect of a magnetic-field-aligned plasma flow with a transverse velocity gradient on the excitation of current-driven ion-acoustic-like waves in a plasma having equal electron and ion temperatures (T(e) = T(i)) was investigated experimentally. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the presence of sheared plasma flow substantially reduces the critical electron drift velocity needed to ...

The influence of crosswind tidal currents on Langmuir circulation in a shallow ocean

[1] Langmuir circulation (LC) is a turbulent process driven by wind and surface waves that plays a key role in transferring momentum, heat, and mass in the oceanic surface layer. On the coastal shelves the largest‐scale LC span the whole water column and thus couple the surface and bottom boundary layers and enhance turbulent mixing. Observations and large eddy simulations (LES) of a shallow co...
